The Micropreneur Center
Here is a very simple business model which anyone can follow to become a Public Design Library Micropreneur.
Step #1: Sketch your design. Generally, the best ideas are those which solve a problem for people. The more universal the problem is, the more potential sales your product or invention is likely to have. Estimate a sales price. Try to keep your actual cost of production at about 50% (1/2) of what your sale price to the end user will be.
the difference between your production costs (+ overhead and selling expenses) will determine if your product is profitable.
Step #2: Research your product. Search the internet for competing products. Browse through the Public Design Library files. Perhaps you'll find a product which can be improved upon oir modified to meet your objectives. Be sure to visit www.uspto.gov and do a patent search to guard against infringing on the designs of others.
Step #3: Design your product. If it's made of metal, plastic, wood, or other 'stock materials' we suggest using the eMachineShop 3-D design program. If it's an electronic device, consider using the free schematic tool DesignWorks Lite and then lay out your printed circuit board with Pad2Pad.

Step #4: Optimize your design. Consider alternate materials and machines in the eMachineShop software to arrive at the best cost and design balance.
Remember that a good design is a balance between cost of production and ultimate sales price.
Step #5: Make an initial product run. Make enough product in your first run to confirm your design and perhaps have a few 'first-run' parts to be sold.
When your order comes in, begin sales through your various channels: emails, postings on user groups, eBay sales, and so forth.
Customer feedback will tell you if the product is a "hit" or a "miss".
Sept #6: Reorder at higher volume. If your product is a hit, anticipate future demand and place additional orders at reasonable quantities well in advance so you don't run out of stock.
